Introduction

Hello and welcome to Newbie To Linux

Why did i move to LINUX ?

Let me start introduce you to the idea of linuxnew.

I am a PHP/MySQL developer, As you may well know, those are a scripting language and a database engine that work best with LINUX or *NIX.

I also like the idea of administrating a system to the detail, you can do virtually anything with a *NIX system, (Check out the meaning of chroot jail !)

Apache works better on linux, so do other important software i use...

What was holding me back ? i needed MSN MESSENGER, MS office and a few more things, To my surprise, everything i needed from the windows world was already available in the LINUX world

For example GAIM is a messenger that can run as many accounts as you need (simultaneously) from MSN to Yahoo to ICQ, through IRC, and many others, no matter how many accounts you have on each (for example i have 2 hotmail accounts now i can run them together)

Open office enables you to do anything you usually do with MS office and save it in any format you like (including MS office) amazing

DVD, CD BURNING, Video Capture, they all work on LINUX, everything was available, so i investigated LINUX a bit more, this is the OS for me !

No crashing *(you can recover whatever problems you have with no need to restart)

Total flexibility (there is a CONFIG file to tweak for whatever you need)

I just had no doubt in my mind that LINUX is the operating system that i should master and use, it just fits my needs for free !

So what did i do ?
First, since i like the idea of bogging, i decided to make my linux experience public by putting it on a BLOG...

Now every newbie to linux can see how to start, what to do when Thing X happens...

How to

And learn from what i have learned about LINUX so far...

This should really spare so much time for many people

I got the RedHat linux 9 CDs (i also got fedora but wanted to stick to RedHat for the moment)
Installed to a machine that already had windows and ran the 2 OSs together (you will see details next)
Learned a few things...
Messed a few things and reinstalled a couple of time
Got the basic knowledge and installed LINUX alone (no need for windows anymore)
Started fixing, upgrading and updating, and tailoring to my needs

Ok, lets get started, You can always move back to the index i setup on an external website that will navigate you back here
